Patient, polite and wise, even when dealing with back-stabbers and murderers, Margie attempts to make the world a better place one perp at a time before her little one arrives. Charlie Meadows (John Goodman), a good-natured slob of a traveling salesman, has entrusted the mystery parcel to Barton Fink (John Turturro), a creatively blocked screenwriter who lives next. To me this is the Coen Brothers finest film - with Blood Simple a close second. If you want a strange trip into Odet's mind, read his journal 'The Time is Ripe'. Odets was highly neurotic and constantly dealing with the 'evil' of Hollywood. Detective Mastrionotti : Thats right, Fink, he lives next door to you. The ever-present Frances McDormand – that's Mrs Joel Coen, in case you didn't know – has made several appearances in the Coenverse, but seven-months-pregnant Minnesota police chief Marge is by far her finest hour: she's nothing less than the most sympathetic and relatable character in the Coens' 30-year back catalogue. The character of Barton Fink is based on the playwright Clifford Odets. The most unlikely hero in movie noir, The Dude is at once a gumshoe, a marijuana connoisseur, a loyal friend and a virile lover, but above all of these things, he is a bowler, and long may El Duderino roll. Synopsis: Following the death of his wife, Los Angeles police detective Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) becomes reckless and suicidal. Everyone's favourite stoner bowler is already ingrained into the public conciousness thanks to a striking performance from Jeff Bridges that leaves nothing to spare. Lerner, the Brooklyn-born character actor who played a myriad of imposing figures in his 60 years in the business, including crime bosses, CEOs, politicians, protective fathers and the monologuing. Tom Reagan (Miller's Crossing) Gabriel Byrne as Tom Reagan - coolest gangster ever? A bit different, but still kinda psychologically messed up: Sonatine, The Quiet Family, Barton Fink. The Ladykillers isn't the most popular Coen movie, but can any film in which Tom Hanks demands "waffles. How often do you get to see Tom Hanks really cut loose as a bad guy? Knocking his 'hitman with a heart' from Road To Perdition into a cocked fedora, Hanks' eccentric Southern professor is a total sod, planning on robbing a casino with his gang while under the supervision of his suspicious landlord. A Texas Ranger who takes far too much delight in flashing his badge, LeBoeuf picks up the reins and joins the adventure but even a lacerated tongue can't stop him from bickering with his nemesis – truly he is the cock to Jeff Bridges' Rooster. It was always going to be hard to draw focus from Jeff Bridges in the Coens' adaptation of the Charles Portis western, but Matt Damon at his most pompous is not something to be missed.
